The Respect for Marriage Act repeals the discriminatory so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and returns the federal government to its constitutional and common-sense practice of honoring lawful marriages celebrated in the states.
Take these five steps with your organization to build support for the Respect for Marriage Act today!
1. Join the Cause
Join the Respect for Marriage Coalition, a partnership of civil rights, faith, health, labor, legal, LGBT, student, and women's organizations working together to build support for the Respect for Marriage Act and repeal DOMA.
2. Identify a Point Person
Assign one member of your organization to be your official Respect for Marriage Coalition liaison. This person is responsible for receiving and distributing Coalition communications and representing your organization at Coalition meetings.
3. Spread the Word
Tell your organization’s supporters why you joined the Respect for Marriage Coalition. Write about it on your organization’s newsletter, magazine, website or blog. Include your organization’s support for the freedom to marry in your e-mail signature.
4. Beat the Drum
Tell everyone that your organization supports passage of the Respect for Marriage Act. Send a media release to your newspaper or write a Letter to the Editor, Op-Ed article or blog post. Meet with local bloggers, reporters and editors to explain why your organization is a member of the Coalition.
5. Tell Your Story
Get together with other members of the Respect for Marriage Coalition to visit your Congressmember and tell your stories together about why you support the freedom to marry. Ask your Congressmember for his or her support for the Respect for Marriage Act.
