A growing majority of Americans support the freedom to marry for gay and lesbian couples, who want to marry for a similar mix of reasons as any other couples: first and foremost, they love each other and want to make a vow of commitment. But 41 states still refuse these couples marriage licenses, denying them the freedom to marry. And the federal so-called Defense of Marriage denies even legally married same-sex couples every single one of the federal protections and responsibilities triggered by marriage and provided to all other married couples.
#Time4Marriage is a public education effort to highlight the broad support for extending the freedom to marry to gay and lesbian couples and show what has become true: America is ready to rise to fairness. It’s time to end marriage discrimination.
Find out how you can help win the freedom to marry for same-sex couples:
Defense of Marriage Act
DOMA unfairly denies married same-sex couples the 1,138+ federal protections and responsibilities that the government provides to other married people, dividing Americans into first-class and second-class citizens, with first-class and second-class marriages.
Unlike all other married couples, same-sex married couples are denied such important federal protections as Social Security survivor benefits, immigration rights, family and medical leave, and the ability to pool resources as a family without unfair taxation.
