Respect for Marriage Coalition Launches National TV Ad Called “Journey”
National Spot Features Real People Who Support the Freedom to Marry
Washington, D.C. – The Respect for Marriage Coalition today unveiled the latest in a series of national television ads aimed at showcasing the broad public support for the freedom to marry. The ad, titled “Journey,” comes on the heels of several high-profile endorsements from bipartisan officials and polling showing that a majority of Americans support equal marriage rights for same-sex couples. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC poll, 58 percent of voters nationally support the freedom marry, including 81 percent of voters under 30. “Journey” reflects the growing support and evolving views of many Americans who have come to believe that discrimination against loving and committed gay and lesbian couples is wrong.
“Journey” features real people talking about supporting the freedom to marry for relatives and friends who are gay. Trevor Brooks talks about his sister Irene, who has been a police officer for 20 years and plans to marry her partner, Leah.
Marc Hersh & Holly Mak speak out for their daughter Emma, who they want to experience the same love and commitment through marriage that they have.
The Very Rev. Gary Hall, dean of Washington National Cathedral and Episcopal priest for more than 35 years, speaks out in the ad for gay and lesbian members in his ministry. Under his leadership, the National Cathedral announced earlier this year it would allow gay and lesbian weddings inside this historic church.
The Respect for Marriage Coalition’s $150K ad buy will launch during network Sunday shows this Sunday, March 24 and run through the following weekend on national cable and networks. The transcript of the ad is below.
